Content warnings serve readers who need them. But they can also spoil plot elements or create a false impression of what a book is about.

Our approach: provide enough information for readers to make informed choices without revealing story details.

How We Classify

Our content warning system uses automated detection supplemented by editorial review:

Automated Detection

Our manuscript processor scans for pattern indicators:

• Sexual content: Explicit or implied intimate scenes
• Violence: Physical violence, graphic descriptions
• Self-harm: References to suicide or self-injury
• Substance use: Drug or alcohol use as significant plot elements
• Abuse: Depictions of emotional, physical, or sexual abuse

Editorial Review

Automated detection catches patterns but misses context. Every flagged book receives editorial review to determine:

• Is the content incidental or central to the story?
• Is the content gratuitous or purposeful?
• What level of warning is appropriate?

What We Display

Content warnings appear:

• On the book's catalog page
• On the book's reader landing page
• In the book's schema metadata
• In export formats (EPUB copyright page)

They do NOT appear:

• On individual chapter pages (to avoid spoilers mid-read)
• In search results (to avoid stigmatizing the book)

The Philosophy

Content warnings are not censorship. They are informed consent. A reader who picks up STIFLED (erotic thriller) should know it contains explicit sexual content and violence. A reader who picks up CHHAAYA (mythological fantasy) should know it's safe for younger readers.

We trust our readers to make their own choices. We just make sure they have the information to choose well.
